The US Green Building Council (USGBC at www.usgbc.org) has established the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification, a certification system that deals with the environmental performance of buildings based on overall characteristics of the project. While the certification does not award credits based on the use of particular products, it does so based upon meeting the performance standards set forth in their rating system. Only the building is certified, not the products.
Accordingly, the USGBC does not certify, endorse or promote products, services or companies. They also don't track, list or report data related to products and their environmental qualities. However, using "green products" may contribute to a building's LEED Certification.
Similarly, the USGBC does not offer credits for structured cabling products or installation. In fact, the USGBC does not yet recognize CSI Division 27, Communications, for LEED credits. Accordingly, at least generally speaking, structured cabling products are not eligible for LEED credits. Although many people believe that cable is included in the Materials section for recycled content and the Regional Materials points, it specifically excludes electrical components.
However, there are several important aspects of AMP NETCONNECT products that are green and environmentally-friendly. AMP NETCONNECT products are Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) compliant. For more information on the Tyco Electronics RoHS initiative, click here. Additionally, there are LEED credit categories that could be enhanced by AMP NETCONNECT products (such as building automation systems).
Looking beyond that, many AMP NETCONNECT products are green-friendly (environmentally) and green-friendly (monetarily). The MRJ21 and MPO trunk cables are a perfect example - higher density allows for reduced electrical load on the end equipment and less restriction on cooling airflow in data centers, and the modularity and reusability of the MRJ21, AMPINNERGY and MPO products are definitely positive considerations and can even save our clients money on installation and facility life cycle costs. Lowering costs and reuse is central to the AMPINNERGY product line which provides a high density, modular method for power distribution. XG Cat 6A F/UTP shielded cabling will allow for reduced electrical load for 10 Gigabit Ethernet electronics, and optical fiber solutions use less electricity than the equivalent twisted-pair solutions - just to name a few.
